A skilled and diverse workforce is essential for the sustainability of companies in the creative sector and Film Export UK works with partners to promote this. Primarily we seek to develop programmes to assist the sales sector and which are supported by Creative Skillset. Such interventions may be to promote wider understanding of the sales and distribution sector, to encourage and assist new entrants or to help the continuing professional development of staff who need to enhance existing or acquire new skills.
The sales sector is small and dynamic and there are few direct routes in from education although certain skills may be a distinct advantage, such as languages combined with an international outlook.
My First Job In Film is a site that charges job-seekers for premium access to listings but Creative Skillset has created a networking app called Hiive allowing work and training opportunities in film and TV to be disseminated vertically by employers and horizontally by users.
Film Export UK partnered with the Film Distributors' Association ("FDA") and the Independent Cinema Office ("ICO") on a trainee scheme called FEDS after the Film Exhibition, Distribution and Sales sub-sectors targeted. The scheme prioritises applicants from under-represented groups providing paid placements of up to nine months duration and many of the alumni have gone on to secure permanent positions in the industry (2016's cadre is pictured below).
BULLYING & HARASSMENT
We endorse the set of principles that industry partners led by the British Film Institute have laid out to help employers offer a safer, more inclusive workplace environment . A 24/7 Film & TV Support Line run by professionally trained staff can help with multiple personal and professional difficulties on 0800 054 00 00.
Film Export UK and Film London jointly created the popular panel event Market Place Live which has racked up over a dozen editions often as part of festivals such as Edinburgh International Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival Sheffield Doc/Fest and even South by SouthWest. The show, an edition of which was filmed here gathers experienced professionals from throughout the film value chain to steer an entirely hypothetical film project chosen by the audience through development, financing, production, marketing and distribution while sharing candid insights along the way.
